The City of London. Just the name is enough to get us going. A square mile full of bankers with inflated bonuses, but look beyond the bankers and we’ve got a lot to be thankful for. The real City, the oldest part of London, with its closely guarded system of independence established centuries ago is what gave Britain the competitive edge to become a great power ruling over a quarter of the Globe. And it set up the City of London as the world’s pre-eminent financial centre. It really did make Britain great.
The City is part of all our lives but few of us know anything about it. I want to get to grips with the great beast, understand its ancient institutions and bewildering traditions and find out what relevance they still have today. And I’ll be meeting the people who live and work here and finding out what really makes this place tick.
